I am so very thankful- a humble give away.

For many, many reasons, this time of the year often brings with it a time for reflection and thanks. I am truly grateful and forever thankful for my family, my friends (near and far), my health; but also for my freedom, and for the gift of life. I have had a safe childhood, warm home. I  live in a country where I chose a profession based on skill and aptitude instead of social standing and gender. My life has had it's twists and turns and it's ups and downs (who's hasn't), but everyday is a day of my own.  I very recently went back to college to teach, but also to learn.  I don't know what the future holds, but the now is pretty awesome.

In celebration of a year of many firsts, and because I am thankful to have been able to reach high and challenge myself, I have some gifts to give. They are humble gifts, but hopefully will spark a project or 2 for their recipients. As I embark on my final quilt of the year, made from very humble beginnings, (all scraps, but prints not solids), I'd like to share, to give back to the community of makers who each and every day offer kind words and encouragement to me and to others.

I have 7 large tyvek envelopes (14 x 10") stuffed with fabric. All scraps, all from my stash, collected over the last 3 years. The bags are loosely curated into the following:
A &B:2 bags- selvedges only
C:1 bag fabric in random shapes and one 6x9" bag stuffed full of selvedges
D:1 bag of already made hexies and many 2 1/2" squares for you to make more, plus one 6x9" bag stuffed full of selvedges
E:1 bag orphan blocks from various projects, lots of  varying sized triangle pieces of fabric and one 6x9" bag stuffed full of selvedges
F:1 bag jelly roll strips (various lengths) and one 6x9" bag stuffed full of selvedges
G:1 bag charm squares and smaller squares and one 6x9" bag stuffed full of selvedges

Most of the fabric scraps are small, but all are usable. They have served me well but now it's time for them to go and be other projects in other makers hands.

I want to give these 7 bags away to 7 people.

All you have to do is leave me a comment and specify in your comment which bag you would prefer (A, B, C, D, E, F, G). I will do my very best to match bags with preferences, knowing that it will likely be impossible for everyone to get their hearts desire. I will select 7 people at random and send you your preferred bag. Please leave one comment per person. If you have a project in mind for these scraps/selvedges, please feel free to share.

That's it. Simple and easy.
Recipients will be announced here and on Instagram on November 17th.

Thank YOU!!!

  1. When I first started reading and saw 'giveaway', my first thought was "I really love the surprise of scrap bags. I wish there was a giveaway of just scraps." Then I read that's exactly what you're doing!! Too funny! I'd love to win C, F, or G, but I'm not keen on selvages, so if I win, throw those in with someone else's bag. I like having random scraps around for paper piecing. I'm working on a scrap mini quilt now that's using browns and creams. Thanks for the chance! The adage "one man's trash is another man's treasure" comes to mind! Your 'humble' giveaway is one I'm most excited about!

  3. How generous of you! I love sharing fabric with people, and my two best friends are coming over this weekend so we can trade fabrics we no longer love.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE 2.5" squares so I could give bags D or G a happy home. One of my friends (mentioned above) is collecting selvedges [and thanks for spelling that the proper way!] so I would pass those along to her.

Oh and I'll be seeing your contribution to that show in Seattle. I'll be catching it in literally the last few hours of the exhibit!

  4. What a wonderful giveaway. I love how another person's scraps can inspire me to see new things. It pushes you just a bit out of your zone to create something fresh. Thank you for the opportunity.

    I prefer f or g.

  5. What a sweet post! I have to say I'm thankful for my partner for flagging me down as I was driving lost and disoriented with a major medical crisis and for finally having my health today. As for the giveaway bag D would be wonderful as I've never hand-sewn anything before but want to dive in head first with EPP and later Kantha quilting. But in all honesty I would put any of these thoughtfully sorted giveaways to good use. I hope you and your family have the best of holidays this year. Nelson Salsa.nelson@gmail.com

  9. I've recently started collecting selvedges; I'd like to make a sewing chair cover out of them and maybe someday a quilt, too. I'd love bag A or B, but really anything with selvedges would make my day! Congratulations on a successful year, and I look forward to seeing what you create in the future! :)

  13. What a generous deed! I'd like a package with selveges! Ha ha! I guess, if I had to choose one, it would be the Hexies. I've alway wanted a Hexies flower quilt!

  14. What a lovely way to say thank you when we should be saying "thank you" to you! It is so very healthy to slow down and assess. Most of us have so much to be thankful for but life can be so distractingly busy that we take for granted our blessings. Congrats and thanks (had to say it!) for sharing! Oh, if I had to make a choice it would be D...love to do more hexes!

  21. What an awesome giveaway, Steph! If I'm lucky to win, I'd love to win Bag D. I've been wanting to start an EPP project..something to work on while I snuggle up on the couch this winter. Those hexies would be a great start! Plus, I've been collecting selvedges for gosh knows how long. Winning some extra ones, may just motivate me to finally start a selvedge project for the new year. Thanks again for the opportunity!

  22. Hi and thank you for amazing give away! Surprise bag with scraps sounds super! If I would be one of the lucky girls, I would be very happy for c, f or g. In fact I was thinking that with f (strips) I could finally make a quilt with stripes which I have never done before. I love your work and perhaps I would make something inspired your Colorado quilt. Now I'm making 'North Star' wall quilt but after Christmas that place needs something else and those sparkling star would look great in our living room. Thank you again! x Teje
